Saturday Snowflake Ride/Last Chance to Work Chihuahua/Halloween

Saturday Ride Information: Hey fellow riders! The season is winding down, and we only have two more scheduled Saturday morning group rides left. Owing to the weather and wetness around Los Burros trailhead #2 last week, we aborted the mission and decided to head down to the Land of the Pioneers trail instead. It was wonderful riding, as some of those cinder covered areas on the side of steep slopes on the Director's Cut gripped a lot better than the normally do.

Anyway, this weekend the only real plausible ride to post is probably a ride in the Snowflake-Taylor trail system. We have a massively wet storm system that is likely to drop an 1-3 inches of rain between Wednesday and Friday morning. This time of year, with the cooler temperatures and low angle of the sun, it isn't likely that anything else is going to be dry enough to ride on Saturday. Snowflake-Taylor is the plan.

Meet at the Snowflake bike park entrance at 8:00 a.m. for a 12-15 mile MTB ride. Some of the Snowflake trails are a little tricky, so you'll need to have decent intermediate MTB skills to enjoy yourself out there on the trails. To get there, head north out of Show Low on Highway 77 to Snowflake. Once in Snowflake, hang a left at the stop light in front of the Maverick gas station (W 7th S. St.) and then go straight about two miles to the bike park. Look for us on the left in front of the bathrooms.

Chihuahua Pines Work: The TRACKS trail crew was out there grinding away once again on Monday trying to get the ongoing work on the new part of the Chihuahua Pines trail on the east side of Highway 60 completed. Although you will now find that the trail is open at both ends and generally complete, there is still a fair amount of finish work to be done out there. And by that, I mean we still need to smooth some areas of the trail out some, deal with tracks made by horses that have come through when the trail was wet in the last couple of weeks, build one more bermed corner, and put up white diamonds, etc. So we are going to put in one more day on Monday October 26th to put on the finishing touches, and that will be the last official trail work day of the year. Meet in the parking lot just west of Arby's in Show Low at 8:00 a.m. to carpool out to the tunnel on highway 60, which is where we will actually stage our work. Carpooling is important on with this one, as parking is very limited on the side of highway 60.

Halloween Ride: To close out our regular group ride season, the last regular ride of the season is going to occur on Halloween, Saturday October 31st. With all of the trail work that has needed to be done this year, there simply has not been enough time to decorate the trails appropriately for a good scary night ride. That said, it doesn't man we can't celebrate the end of the season with a Halloween ride anyway! Meet at the Buena Vista trailhead at 8:00 a.m. that morning, and come in costume or wear your favorite Halloween apparel for the event. We might have some Halloween treats at the end of the ride for those who survive! Look for details in next week's newsletter.
